Note: The data was last updated in May 2016. This update corrects primarily very minor features of the data. While it is unlikely to have any effect on broad research findings, we strongly encourage researchers to download the most up to date version. Following the May update we expect to move toward a more regular annual updating schedule.
The past decade has seen dramatically increased attention to questions related to taxation and revenue in developing countries, from both policymakers and researchers. However, the quality of available cross-country tax and revenue data has remained seriously deficient, potentially leading to highly flawed research results and misplaced policy advice.
The ICTD created, during the period 2010-2014, a substantially more complete and accurate Government Revenue Dataset (GRD) for research, which was launched in in September 2014. A Working Paper describing the construction of the dataset can be found here, while a User Guide & FAQs to assist users to understand the construction of the dataset and how to use it can be found here.
The most recent version of the Government Revenue Dataset - released in May 2016 - is open and free for you to use. The primary data file (core dataset) is available for download in two formats and can be downloaded here:
- ICTD Government Revenue Dataset June 2016 (ods)
- ICTD Government Revenue Dataset June 2016 (xlsx)

Dataset Update History
The original dataset was launched in September 2014. The dataset underwent a major update in July 2015, with data added for more recent years, updating of data to reflect changes to other international sources, and correction of minor errors in the original version of the dataset. Since then more modest updates were undertaken in November 2015 (minor changes to data for Qatar and Ethiopia), January 2016 and May 2016 (improvement to metadata, with a focus on region and income groups).
JOIN THE GRD MAILING LIST
If you are using the data we encourage you to join the ICTD GRD mailing list, through which we will provide news about future updates, as well as other relevant events and information. Communication will be extremely limited, but will help to ensure that users always have access to the most up to date data for research.
