Max Gallien, Vanessa van den Boogaard pen letter to the editor at FT

Research Director Max Gallien and Senior Research Fellow Vanessa van den Boogaard, co-leads of ICTD’s Informality and Tax programme, wrote a letter to the editor of the Financial Times responding to a recent article about Africa’s urbanisation boom.

“There is no question that African cities need to raise more revenue to finance sustainable development. But focusing on those hustling in the informal sector risks missing the more fundamental challenge — namely how to more effectively tax the emergent islands of affluence in ‘consumption cities’ that the article describes,” they said in part.
